ABOUT THE ART SCHOOL
CATHERINE CARTER ART SCHOOL's Studio Art Program provides a unique creative experience to Students age 9 to 17 in Southcoast Massachusetts.
We also offer professional development courses to art teachers.
We also offer professional development courses to art teachers.
• TRADITIONAL TRAINING - Our students learn classical techniques in drawing and painting, with lessons about proportion, shading, perspective, composition, color mixing, and art history. This provides even the youngest with a solid background for a lifetime of art creation and appreciation.
• INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION - Our classes are capped at 6 seats, allowing for personalized attention tailored to each student's interests and level of experience.
• OPTIONS FOR INDIVIDUALITY - Each project includes an element that students can select for themselves, such as choosing their own colors or designing their own backgrounds. This helps them to tap into and express their own unique creative voices.
• EXPERIENCE WITH MULTIPLE MATERIALS - We use a wide variety of materials, including graphite pencil, colored pencil, colored markers, watercolor paint, acrylic paint, and paper collage. This gives students a chance to try a range of wet and dry media to discover what each medium does best and see what they are drawn to naturally.
• UNIQUE LOCATION - Located within the Hatch Street Studios community, the school is surrounded by the creative energy of more than 65 professional artists working in diverse media from textiles to clay to photography. Our classes often include "field trips" to visit a neighboring artist's studio to view their work.
• OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXHIBITION - Every November, as part of Hatch Street Studios' annual open studios event, we host an exhibit of our students' work. This allows their artwork to be seen and appreciated by family members, friends, and the hundreds of guests who attend the open studios every year.
• CONVENIENT HOURS - Our classes meet after school, on Saturdays, during school vacations, and over the summer, so they fit conveniently into busy schedules.
• YEARS OF EXPERIENCE - We first opened our doors here at Hatch Street Studios in 2018! Our instructor, Catherine Carter, has been teaching drawing and painting to all ages for more than 25 years.
• ONGOING RELATIONSHIPS - Students often take our classes for years, sometimes returning as teaching assistants once they pass our age range.
