PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT for ART teachers
Our studio art program for Massachusetts art teachers features a series titled CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS OF NEW BEDFORD. The Whaling City serves as a community for many creative talents, working in myriad styles and materials to express deeply held beliefs and experiences. Our goal for this series is to introduce teachers to these unique individuals so that they may inspire the teachers' own artwork and, by extension, the young students in their classrooms.
Each course in the series focuses on a different artist from Hatch Street Studios in New Bedford for inspiration. Participants earn 10 Professional Development Points per course, as approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
We begin the course by visiting the featured artist's studio (located in the same building as our school) to hear about their career and view their artwork. Then we return to Catherine Carter Art School's classroom to create a project inspired by some aspect of that artist's work, such as its style, materials, colors, theme, or subject matter. The course wraps up with a group critique, attended by the featured artist, who contributes feedback. On the last day, participants receive a certificate of completion.
Our professional development program is a wonderful opportunity for Massachusetts-based art teachers to:
• Discover an inspiring professional contemporary artist with an active creative career.
• Develop their own artistic practice with feedback from the instructor and their colleagues.
• Meet and get to know fellow art teachers through group discussions on their experiences in their classrooms.
• Gather ideas for new projects, methods, and materials for their art classrooms.
• Earn 10 PDPs.
Each course consists of 2 three-hour and 1 four-hour class meetings, for a total of 10 contact hours.
Each time the course is offered, a different artist is highlighted, so participants may attend multiple courses for 10 PDPs each.
Tuition is $195 per course.
There is a limit of 6 participants.
Each participant is assigned their own work area in our classroom, which they may leave set up with their artwork and materials throughout the three days of the course. This space includes a large table, an easel, and wall space.
Participants bring their own supplies. We ask that you do not use oil paint, spray-paint, or any potentially toxic materials.
Courses during 2025 will be scheduled as follows:
CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS, PART 2: Wednesday, April 23, 1 to 4 PM / Thursday, April 24, 1 to 4 PM / Friday, April 25, 1 to 5 PM
CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS, PART 3: Wednesday, June 25, 1 to 4 PM / Thursday, June 26, 1 to 4 PM / Friday, June 27, 1 to 5 PM
