PDP COURSES for ART teachers
Our studio art program for Massachusetts art teachers currently features a series titled CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS OF NEW BEDFORD. The Whaling City serves as a community for many creative talents, working in myriad styles and materials to express deeply held beliefs and experiences. Our goal for this series is to introduce teachers to these unique individuals so that they may inspire the teachers' own artwork and, by extension, the young students in their classrooms.
Offered seasonally, each course in the series focuses on a different artist from Hatch Street Studios in New Bedford for inspiration. Participants earn 15 Professional Development Points per course, as approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
We begin the course by visiting the featured artist's studio to hear about their career and view their artwork. Then we return to Catherine Carter Art School's classroom to create two projects inspired by some aspect of that artist's work, such as its style, materials, colors, theme, or subject matter. Project 1 will be the participant's personal expression in response to the inspiring artist, and Project 2 will be a prototype that the participant can assign to students in their own classroom. The course wraps up with a group critique, and participants receive a certificate for completing the course.
Our professional development program is a wonderful opportunity for Massachusetts-based art teachers to:
• Discover an inspiring professional contemporary artist with an active creative career.
• Develop their own artistic practice with feedback from the instructor and their colleagues.
• Meet and get to know fellow art teachers through group discussions on their experiences in their classrooms.
• Gather ideas for new projects, methods, and materials for their art classrooms.
• Earn 15 PDPs.
Our syllabus is as follows:
Class 1: Introductions. Visit the featured artist's studio.
Class 2: Participants bring in their preferred art materials. Work on Project 1.
Class 3: Work on Project 2.
Class 4: Process critique. Continue to work on projects.
Class 5: Final critique.
The next session, titled CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS OF NEW BEDFORD, PART 2, meets for 5 Sunday afternoons during Fall 2024 - September 29, October 6, October 13, October 27, and November 3, from 1 to 4 PM (no class on October 20).
Tuition is $325 for the course, which consists of 5 three-hour class meetings / 15 hours of studio time.
There is a limit of 6 spaces.
Participants bring their own supplies. We ask that you do not use oil paint, spray-paint, or any potentially toxic materials.
The artist inspiration for Fall 2024 is David Morton Meyers, a self-professed "jack of all trades" who combines paint, wood, and found objects into striking and witty assemblages. Classically trained as a fine artist, David's skill with multiple materials and techniques allows him to craft expressive, humorous pieces that take the viewer on a wild and unpredictable journey. His recent work includes such diverse creations as wooden whale plaques, detailed ink drawings, and assemblages featuring neon lights, shaped wooden surfaces, and found objects such as golf balls and plastic dinosaurs. David will inspire participants to follow their own muse to whatever unexpected places it guides us.
