HISTORY

CATHERINE CARTER ART STUDIO opened our doors in a shared space at Hatch Street Studios in New Bedford in 2018, offering realistic drawing classes to 10 to 15 year olds. In 2019, we moved to our own classroom at nearby 90 Hatch and expanded our offerings to include weekly painting classes and monthly mixed-media workshops for adults. Also in 2019, we were approved by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to offer professional development points to public school teachers. And finally in 2020, we moved to our current space at 88 Hatch Street, Studio 210B.
The school's owner and main instructor, Catherine Carter, has taught art for more than 25 years. She was an adjunct professor at Framingham State University for 16 years, and currently teaches at Lasell University and Community College of Rhode Island. She has also served as an instructor at art museums in Attleboro, Framingham, New Bedford, Newport, and Worcester. She holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Painting from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, a Bachelor's Degree from Lesley University, and a Diploma from the School of Fashion Design in Boston.
In addition to her warm and nurturing demeanor, Catherine's specialty is her versatility in both art materials and subject matter. An accomplished abstract artist (CatherineCarterFineArt.com) she feels equally at home in a range of styles from photorealistic drawing to impressionist painting. Topics covered in her recent classes have included painting water in acrylic, portrait drawing in charcoal, botanical illustration in colored pencil, and landscape in watercolor.
Our program serves everyone from absolute beginners who want to learn basic techniques to experienced artists who are searching for their own voice.
